Product Recomendation: Seventh Generation Diswashing Gel
Until as recently as two years ago I had never known the joy that is having a dishwasher in my home. At first I found it to be a miraculous amenity, simplifying my life immensely. Over time though, I began to realize what an utter pain in the posterior they can truly be.
My current dishwasher is an evil old bint. It catches partway through the cycle and the dial needs to be manually advanced every time. It also frequently becomes clogged, making my dishes filthier than they were when they went in, no matter how religiously I pre-rinse. I have tried several different dish detergents, all with the same horrific results, to the point where I returned to predominantly hand-washing all my dishes.
Then, I finally caved on my adamant refusal to become more of a hippie, and tried Seventh Generation Dishwasher Gel. I previously had an immediate distrust of "environmentally friendly" cleaners due to my experiences with them not actually getting anything clean, but my preconceptions were shattered when I switched to this product. It is the only dish detergent I have used in this godforsaken contraption thus far that:
-Doesn't smell like chlorine (it's chlorine-free, hooray!)
-Doesn't leave spots all over my glasses
-at least most of the time, rids my plastic cups of the nasty smell they tend to retain
-Prevents my dishwasher from getting clogged up so frequently
-Lasts me more than a month before I have to buy a new bottle
So, that being said, I'd like to remind everyone that I don't receive a single penny from Seventh Generation or any other company whose products I may in the future recommend, and everything I have to say here comes from my own experiences. So by all means, give it a try if what you're using now isn't working out for you.

Their laundry detergent and fabric softener are also pretty awesome. They're highly concentrated so you can use less per load, which leads to one jug lasting you a good while. I use the lavender/eucalyptus scent, which is very mild and subtle instead of slapping you in the nose with gross artificial lavenderoid fragrance #456 or whatever. I'll have to give the dishwashing gel a try!

hi there -
You're using the same handle my owner uses to comment. That's pretty odd. XD I know you're not him because we don't use the laundry detergent ...
Speaking of, we've used the seventh generation laundry detergent, and we found it okay, but a little too expensive for our purposes.
If you're curious, we use arm & hammer perfume/dye free laundry detergent, we have a housemate who has some moderate chemical sensitivities and it works well for us. We can't use fabric softener for that reason, too - the static cling drives me a little nuts but it's better than impairing the health of someone I live with. :D

Oops, sorry about the handle confusion! I thought it would've used my gmail name, which is the account I used to post this - it's poikilothermism. :D I'll change my settings.
Arm & Hammer is good stuff too, I didn't know they made a perfume free formula. I wish more companies would offer that - most scented detergents smell like rotting sugary candy. Walking down that aisle in a grocery store is enough to make anyone feel queasy, I can't imagine what a pain in the ass it must be for people with chemical sensitivities.
